John L. Grove chose to retire after spending numerous years working together with his brother to establish their crane construction company into a world leader. His wife Cora and John celebrated their retirement by setting out on a cross-country journey utilizing their R.V. After that particular trip, JLG Industries, Inc. emerged and became the worldwide leading manufacturer of specialized material handling machinery and mobile aerial work platforms.

John spent a lot of the time in the R.V. trip talking to prior business associates who the Groves were visiting on their trip. While they were visiting the Hoover Dam, sadly, 2 workers were accidentally electrocuted on scaffolding. During subsequent conversations, John discovered a big untapped market for a type of product which could quickly and safely hoist people into the air in order to carry out construction and maintenance work.

John decided to take action when John and his wife returned from the journey. He formed a partnership with two dear friends when they purchased a small metal fabrication business in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. In the year 1970, with an original crew of 20 workers, the trio built and sold the very first JLG aerial work platform. Numerous parts of the basic design elements of that original machinery are still being incorporated into the present machinery

Ever since John L. Grove first came back into town from his cross-country trip, the company has come a very long way.
