Propane cylinders take up little space and they can be kept either inside of a storage area or outside of a facility. It does take some time to switch out a propane cylinder, though, it still does require knowledge of safety standards like the Occupational Health and Safety Administration or OSHA and also requires operator training in order to be conducted safely.
Internal combustion trucks are faster and easier to refuel, compared to electric lift trucks, but the IC or internal combustion engines create major air-polluting emissions and are very noisy.
NARROW-AISLE LIFT TRUCKS
The Class 2 lift trucks consists of numerous types of forklift that are specially designed to be utilized in narrow aisles. The typical storage aisles are 12 feet wide, and this easily allows a counterbalanced lift truck to turn in the aisle and put a load away. Typically, narrow aisles are 8 feet wide, whereas the very narrow aisles are approximately 5.5 to 6 feet wide. These narrow aisles need specialized lift trucks that are capable of putting away loads without any turning at all or that are small enough to turn on a tight radius.
Turret trucks, order pickers and reach trucks are 3 of the most common narrow-aisle trucks. The differences between these forklifts are discussed below.
Narrow-Aisle Reach Trucks
The original narrow-aisle lift truck is considered to be the conventional reach truck. These machines do not need a big counterweight and are hence, small enough to turn in narrow aisles. Instead, stability is provided by the outrigger arms that extend in front of the trucks. However, depending on the storage configuration, these outrigger arms can prevent the forklifts from getting near enough to the storage rack to retrieve and deposit loads. To be able to overcome this particular situation, a pantograph was designed. The pantograph is a reach truck which is designed with a telescoping mechanism. This allows forks to reach into storage areas easily and concisely.
The best environment for narrow aisle lift trucks is a place which has good lighting, clean floors and good traffic flow, well-maintained floor, in addition to ample turning space.
