Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries that need to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety procedures must be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is vital to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated close to the charging area. The route to the station must not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While in the vicinity of a charging area and battery, open flames are not allowed. Do not allow objects such as lighters or matches to be utilized while someone is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging method could release gas. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
