Regular inspections could greatly help to reduce forklift repairs and save you copious amounts of money eventually. The standing joke within the industry is a lift truck technician coining the saying "Pay me now, or pay me later," because it generally costs more to procrastinate when it comes to lift trucks. Like for example, the minor fixes which go unrepaired could later turn into expensive repairs.
Tilt Cylinders
If they are not checked, oil leaks are a really serious problems. On a regular basis, the machinery must be checked for oil leaks and/or damage. Oil leaks could cause really dangerous uncontrolled movement of the mast. Whether the leaks are inside of the cylinder or outside, the outcome can lead to cylinder drift and loss of vital fluid. When damage or leaks are detected, you usually will have to replace the entire cylinder assembly or the seals.
Chains
You don't want mast lift chains to stretch beyond acceptable limits, so pay attention and look carefully for any signs of wear and tear or damage. Regularly check a chain wear gauge in order to monitor the wear. If the chain is worn beyond 2 percent or rusted, it is time to replace the chain. Following these guidelines would help keep your machinery functioning optimally.
Mast
The mast needs to be smoothly moving up and down when using the lift control lever. Be sure to check to see if the mast is tilting forwards and backwards in a smooth manner. You may have to lubricate the mast strip sliding surfaces if the sliding surfaces are binding. Lubricate their fittings too, as there is a fitting located on either side of the inner mast. The lift bracket side rollers are one more lubrication spot.
Forks
The tines have to be checked for damage, wear and cracks as worn or cracked forks can fail with out any warnings. Of course, any damaged fork means immediately taking the truck out of service. If the cracks are deeper than just on the surface, they must be replaced because they really can't be safely repaired.
