It is far more complex to drive a forklift than to drive a car. The lift truck operator has to have the necessary skills and receive special training to operate a lift truck. A high level of attentiveness is needed to drive a forklift. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that 85 individuals die in mishaps related to forklifts per year. Roughly 35,000 individuals are injured each year in forklift accidents. Nearly 50 percent of operator deaths result from a forklift tip over.

Operators need to be able to correctly estimate the weight of a load to prevent the equipment from tipping over. The load weight in construction environments will often be posted on the load. If the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks and a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, the total load weight will be roughly 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator must take additional weight into account.

It is dangerous for drivers to make poorly informed estimations about the actual load weight and whether the lift truck could handle it. If an operator cannot be sure regarding the load weight, he should request help from the supervisor.

Failure to pull up near enough to a building or raise a load using an extended boom can be another cause of tip overs. To avoid tipping lift truck, it is essential to use the load chart. Even if a lift truck does not really tip over, an accident has happened whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Even if damage might not be obvious, the rear axle could have been broken upon hitting the ground.

Lift trucks can also tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded forklift can tip if an operator has positioned a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the operator reverses the lift truck and turns abruptly whilst bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity would be pushed to the edges and a tip over could occur. A driver should always use the joysticks to be able to lower and retract the fork.
